Video games, an escape from reality? Sometimes, yes. But, there are times when they immerse us in stories that tug at our heartstrings. Here’s a list of games that will make you shed a tear, or perhaps many more.

1. Heavy Rain (2010)

A gripping interactive drama, Heavy Rain revolves around four characters’ desperate search for the Origami Killer. The game presents ethical dilemmas, and your decisions impact the narrative. With its emotional depth, the game explores themes of love, loss, and sacrifice. A rollercoaster of emotions, Heavy Rain will leave you breathless and heartbroken.

Its gameplay is based on quick time events (QTEs) and contextual prompts, requiring players to make split-second decisions that directly affect the story. The narrative follows four protagonists: Ethan Mars, Madison Paige, Norman Jayden, and Scott Shelby, who are all connected by the mysterious Origami Killer case.

Each character has their own unique abilities, which players must utilize to progress through the game’s many branching story paths. The emotional impact of their choices and the ultimate resolution of the Origami Killer case will depend on the players’ actions.

I personally loved the game as it made me play it over and over again in tears to get the different endings.

SPOILER ALERT - There are 7 different endings in the game:
Ethan’s Grave Ethan meets his end. Shaun sheds tears over his father’s resting place, casting a lingering glance at the tombstone before departing with his mother, Grace. If Madison and/or Scott remain alive, they can be seen observing from a distance.
A New Start Ethan survives and avoids prison; Shaun lives; Madison is neither kissed nor rejected, or dead Ethan and Shaun get ready to settle into their new home. Shaun assures Ethan that they’ll always be together, prompting Ethan to chase his son in a playful manner.
A New Life Ethan survives and avoids jail; Shaun lives; Madison is kissed, forgiven, and lives. Ethan, Madison, and Shaun prepare to start their lives in a new home, and they are now married. Madison and Ethan talK about the peace they’ve earned and she chuckles as she watches him playfully pursue his son.
Origami Blues Ethan avoids ending up in prison but ends his life and; Shaun dies; Madison is neither kissed nor rejected, or dead. Ethan finds himself in a motel room, retrieves the gun from the Shark Trial, and ends his life.
Tears in the Rain Ethan dies and avoids jail time; Shaun dies; Madison is kissed, forgiven, and lives. Ethan and Madison visit Shaun’s final resting place,his grave. Although Ethan is clearly distraught, Madison attempts to comfort him, urging him to begin anew and create a family with her while declaring her love for him. Ethan asks Madison to wait for him as she starts to leave, but then he takes out a gun and shoots himself before she can intervene, leaving her to weep over his lifeless body.
Helpless Ethan meets his end in prison; Shaun dies. Ethan is wrongfully accused of being the Origami Killer and locked up with numerous origami figures in his cell, where he takes his own life.
Innocent Ethan goes to prison; Shaun lives. Ethan’s innocence is established, and he is freed from prison. He is welcomed by Shaun and Grace, hinting at their intentions to repair their strained relationship.

The game features simple 2D graphics reminiscent of early RPGs but excels in creating a chilling atmosphere and complex, emotion-driven storytelling. Players will navigate a dangerous and surreal world filled with hostile creatures and twisted works of art, uncovering the secrets of the gallery and the characters’ pasts.

In my opinion, the game isn’t special by it’s graphics and scenery but it does grow to the heart by its captivating story and characters relationship. Garry and Ib form a special bond which makes you sob at the end. Be careful about the different decisions you make as they are crucial in the ending.

I didn’t play the game, but i watched a gameplay of it on youtube and it was like watching a sad movie. You can bond with the main characters quickly and the story keeps your attention.
